Canadian Nicholas Latifi will race for top Italian squad Prema Powerteam in the Formula 3 European Championship this season.
The 18-year-old competed with Carlin last term in European and British F3 in what was only his second full year of car racing, after a rookie season in Italian F3 in 2012.
He claimed two British F3 poles at Silverstone, two top-five finishes in European F3 and a ninth-place finish in the Macau Grand Prix.
Latifi, who is half-Italian, makes the switch to Prema's line-up of Dallara-Mercedes after strong tests in the lead-up to Christmas.
He has also worked extensively with Prema staff in the Florida Winter Series, in which he has been a race winner.
"I enjoyed some positive days of testing with Prema and felt comfortable in their working environment," said Latifi.
"This year is a very important one for me, and I'm confident that with the experience and knowledge of the team, combined with my abilities, we'll be consistently challenging up at the front."
Prema team manager Rene Rosin added: "He's a very interesting prospect and we kept a very close eye on him as a rival in 2013.
"Despite being a rookie, he showed no reverential awe and it was this kind of fighting spirit that convinced us to have him in our team."
The acquisition of Latifi appears to complete Prema's Euro F3 line-up for 2014, with Antonio Fuoco, Esteban Ocon and Dennis van de Laar already confirmed.
