Zonta on Top in Practice 2 - Italy

Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta topped the times in Friday's second practice session for the Italian Grand Prix but it was McLaren who showed they are the dominant team once again as World Champion Michael Schumacher crashed out

Zonta finished with a time of 1:20.531, thanks to an impressive late lap, to lead the times but his effort was slower than the best time of the day set by McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa in the morning run.

McLaren were on form in both sessions and the second hour saw them claim second, third and fourth places with Juan Pablo Montoya, 1.052 seconds off the pace in second, leading Kimi Raikkonen in third and de la Rosa in fourth.

Williams looked to have solved their recent problems as Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld claimed fifth and sixth respectively while Vitantonio Liuzzi claimed seventh in the Red Bull Racing test car.

Jarno Trulli was the fastest Toyota race driver but finished eighth, 1.747 seconds slower than Zonta, while the Renault pair of Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso completed the top ten with limited running.

Schumacher, struggling to find pace in his Ferrari, spun out and crashed into the tyres at the Parabolica during the session to leave himself with plenty of work ahead of his team's home race.

Temperatures rose to 32 degrees as the session began and Nicolas Kiesa ended up in the gravel trap early in the session then Ralf Schumacher went across the gravel at the Variante Ascari.

With 25 minutes of the session left to run all but four cars Kiesa, the Red Bull machines of David Coulthard and Christian Klien, and Alonso had completed a timed lap.

Raikkonen was at the top of the pile with a time of 1:21.735 with de la Rosa second, the Williams duo of Webber and Heidfeld third and fourth and Montoya completing a two-team lock-out of the top five.

Zonta was ahead with ten minutes of the session left to run on a time of 1:21.203 as Montoya moved up to second ahead of third-placed Raikkonen with de la Rosa suffering an apparent problem on one of his laps.

De la Rosa led the way in the earlier session with a time of 1:20.201 to finish more than one-and-a-half seconds clear of closest challenger Mark Webber, the fastest of the racing drivers.
