Wurz disappointed to lose out to Kimi

McLaren-Mercedes test driver Alex Wurz has expressed his disappointment at losing out to Finnish hotshoe Kimi Raikkonen in the race to take over Mika Hakkinen's seat for next year

Wurz joined the McLaren squad as a third driver at the end of last year, after a lacklustre season with Benetton, in the hope of rekindling his career. After a year of testing and development work for the Woking team, the Austrian had been hopeful of stepping up to the race team when a vacancy became available.

However, despite being a contender to take over from Hakkinen, he was overlooked in favour of Raikkonen, who made his debut with Sauber this year and has to date competed in only 14 Grands Prix

"Obviously I'm disappointed not to have achieved one of the two principal seats in the team," said Wurz. "I understand, however, that I came very close to achieving my goal of racing for McLaren."

Despite his disappointment, Wurz will continue as third driver with the team, but is keen to point out that his contract does not exclude him from taking a race seat elsewhere should one become available.

"I'm pleased that the team has recognised my contribution through this year and reaffirmed their commitment to me for the coming season," he said. "It has been made clear that the team will support my career and whilst I continue to gain valuable experience in such a good organisation, they will ensure that I will be ready if a competitive opportunity arises."
