Williams: Pizzonia Has Yet to Deliver

Brazilian stand-in Antonio Pizzonia still has everything to prove to Williams after a cautious performance in qualifying for Sunday's German Grand Prix.

Brazilian stand-in Antonio Pizzonia still has everything to prove to Williams after a cautious performance in qualifying for Sunday's German Grand Prix.

"He drove too conservatively in the second part," said technical director Sam Michael after the 23-year-old sank to 10th in the decisive qualifying session after setting the second fastest time in pre-qualifying.

"In the main qualifying he didn't get it together really."

Pizzonia, the team's second test driver, faces the race of his career at Hockenheim on Sunday after being called up as a stand-in for recuperating German Ralf Schumacher after regular Spanish reserve driver Marc Gene made little impression.

The Brazilian was dropped by Jaguar after 11 races without scoring a point last year and Sunday offers him a chance to make amends for the damage of that abrupt dismissal and resurrect his Formula One career.

"He's made life difficult for himself, starting where he is," added Michael. "He's obviously fast and you can see what he did in the practice session. But he's got to deliver for us tomorrow."

Williams have two vacancies for next season, although one is expected to go to Pizzonia's former Jaguar teammate Mark Webber, and the Brazilian believes he still has a chance of securing a drive. But he was clearly disappointed by his performance.

"In my final qualifying lap the car felt different as we made some changes to it between the two sessions which made it unexpectedly hard to drive," he said. "I think we have a good race car though so we will try and score points."
