Williams launch: Team craves results
The Williams team has set high targets for the new FW25, which was launched at Barcelona on Friday, and team boss Frank Williams thinks there is a good chance of exceeding them
After last season, Williams said that it would require a radical design to equal or beat Ferrari, and the team is confident that it has achieved this with the FW25.
"2002 taught us a lot of lessons, but we think we've got a good product," said Williams. "We're keen to see if it's as good as the best. Williams and BMW are very impatient companies who have set high targets with this car. I think there's a good chance of exceeding them.
"We have a new, innovative chassis as a product of a completely different way of thinking. And with the P83, BMW has developed another new and more powerful engine. With Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher we have two winning drivers ably assisted by a skilled and committed team. Moreover, we have been very impressed by the performance steps taken by Michelin over the winter."
Chief Operations Officer Sam Michael said: "Over the winter, Michelin has made a lot of progress on compounds and construction. We have worked a lot on the gearbox and the engine interface."
When asked whether Williams would have an advantage over Ferrari and McLaren by running its new car from the start of the season, Michael said: "I wouldn't say McLaren and Ferrari haven't put the work in. The three of us are traditionally leading teams, but Ferrari already has a margin from last year. I can see the new car from Toyota looking strong, but we're up for the challenge."
