Rival squad Red Bull had both its cars excluded from qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after flaps on their front wings failed a deflection test.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Why Red Bull was excluded

Red Bull boss Christian Horner admitted after the race that his team had gone too far with its front wing design, but said other squads - such as Williams - also had front wings that appeared to deflect excessively under aerodynamic load.

Smedley said Williams's design passed the governing body's tests in Abu Dhabi.

"I think the FIA tested quite a few front wing flaps, certainly ours was tested, and it was passed as being legal," he said.

"We had conversations with the FIA over the weekend, and in the end they were content with what we were doing, that we weren't infringing the regulations.

"What other teams are doing I can't really comment on, but certainly we had a legal car."

GARY ANDERSON: F1 needs to enforce flexi-wing rules properly

He conceded all teams were focused on exploiting the maximum possibilities of the wing regulations.

"I am sure Horner's correct that all teams are pushing, it just all depends on how far you are going to push doesn't it?" Smedley said.

"There's a set of technical regulations, there's a very clear article that you can't have moveable aerodynamic devices on the car - article 3.15."
