Weekend review and results round-up

Valencia has tended to be a rather flat weekend in the past - but not this time. Coming straight after the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting, the event started with feverish debate over the implications of the 2011 announcements, particularly the arrival of Pirelli as the sport's new tyre supplier and the introduction of moveable rear wing devices to aid overtaking

The incident-packed race saw Sebastian Vettel return to the top step of the podium while his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber had a remarkable escape from a horrifying aerial accident. It was the safety car period for the latter that prompted the biggest fall-out - with Ferrari enraged not just that its cars had been trapped behind the pace car, but that Lewis Hamilton's penalty for passing it had little effect on the result.

The support races in Valencia were no less eventful, but amid mayhem in GP2 and GP3 it was points leader Pastor Maldonado and Esteban Gutierrez who had the most productive weekends.

Elsewhere, Jorge Lorenzo tightened his grip on MotoGP with another win in the Dutch TT, on a weekend when his absent team-mate Valentino Rossi announced that he planned to return for the Czech Grand Prix in mid-August.
