Weekend review and results round-up
The weather dominated conversation throughout the Malaysian Grand Prix build-up, as heavy showers hit the circuit around the scheduled race time each day - and led to predictions of chaotic, potentially truncated race
In the end, the grand prix was utterly dry, unlike qualifying, in which the top teams' over-reliance on weather forecasting equipment over the old fashioned technique of looking outside saw Ferrari and McLaren embarrassingly eliminated. That gave Red Bull - which only just got out in time to avoid a similar disaster - an open goal on Sunday, and Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber duly delivered a crushing one-two that closed the title battle right up.
Meanwhile conversations about how to ensure spectacular racing at all times continued among the teams, with tyre rules and KERS on the agenda. There were more immediate rule changes afoot too, with the banning of outboard mirrors now imminent.
Elsewhere in racing, Sebastien Loeb stretched his World Rally Championship lead by winning in Jordan, although the use of road positioning tactics by the two WRC manufacturers left even the victorious Loeb frustrated and calling for changes.
The rest of the motorsport action was taking place in Britain, where the Superleague Formula kicked off with Craig Dolby and Sebastien Bourdais the star performers, and the British Touring Car Championship opener saw last-minute signing Fabrizio Giovanardi assume an early points lead. The revamped British Formula 3 Championship got underway too, with Jean-Eric Vergne clearly the man to beat when races two and three take place at Oulton Park today.
