Verstappen shines for Minardi
Jos Verstappen improved Minardi's best qualifying performance of the season by three slots as he claimed 15th position on the Canadian Grand Prix grid, despite the final session being held on a dry track
After the team managed 11th (Verstappen) and 13th (Wilson) places in Friday's wet session, the Dutchman managed to outqualify both Jordans and Jenson Button's BAR-Honda as well as his team-mate Justin Wilson. The Briton was 18th, ahead of Ralph Firman's Jordan and Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren, which spun off at the first corner.
"It was a fantastic lap, like the one in Monaco two weeks ago," Verstappen said. "The qualifying lap was a good one, with no mistakes, and I'm very pleased with the time."
In the light of his rather public spat with McLaren boss Ron Dennis in yesterday's press conference, team boss Paul Stoddart's assessment was perhaps predictable.
"What a fantastic performance from our drivers," he said. "They both drove mega-laps in qualifying. It's a shame about Kimi, but these things happen..."
