Valencia Test: Day One Results

The Frenchman put in a hard day's work at the twisting Spanish circuit, setting the fastest time (1m15.89s) and the highest number of laps (105) as the Formula 1 teams prepare for the Hungarian Grand Prix in 10 days time.

World Champion Mika Hakkinen, having his first outing at Valencia, was second quickest, completing 55 laps with a best time of 1m16.66s.

Luciano Burti, favourite to take the number two seat at Jaguar next year, did his prospects no harm as he finished the day with the third quickest time of 1m17.84s.

Alexander Wurz gave his confidence a much needed boost by outpacing his Benetton team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella, with the Austrian setting a time of 1m17.90s - two tenths faster than the Italian.

The teams were testing soft and supersoft tyres, and high downforce set-ups to cope with the tight, twisting Hungaroring. And sources at the track said the WilliamsFW22 was sporting winglets on the side of the car and on the engine cover, but with Jenson Button setting the slowest time of the day (1m19.01s) Williams will be hoping for improvements tomorrow.
