Valencia day 2: JPM smashes record

Juan Pablo Montoya has set a blistering pace on the second day of testing at the Valencia circuit today (Tuesday), smashing the circuit's unofficial lap record in his Williams

The Colombian set a best lap of 1m10.15s, beating this year's previous best time of 1m10.62s, set by Kimi Raikkonen, by almost half a second. Fernando Alonso set the second quickest time of the day, ahead of Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello.

Williams was testing a new aerodynamic package on its BMW-powered FW25, following an indifferent test at Barcelona last week. The new package includes a new front wing, bargeboards and some mechanical updates.

Speaking from the Valencia pitlane, Chief operations engineer Sam Michael told AUTOSPORT: "It's all going very well. We've got the two new aero package updates which we didn't have at the test at Barcelona and it all looks pretty good."

Allan McNish joined Alonso in running for Renault, and was happy with the balance of his car, despite setting the slowest time of the test. "The car is good," he said. "We just need more power. With heavy fuel the balance is okay."

Barrichello completed a mammoth 114 laps in his 2002-spec Ferrari, concentrating on long runs and tyre development. Ralph Firman had another impressive run for Jordan, completing 46 laps for the team.
