Tyre makers undecided on future

Bridgestone and Michelin have both said it is too early to make a decision about whether they are interested in supplying a control tyre to Formula One in 2007

The Formula One Commission voted on Monday to bring an end to a tyre war in the sport by agreeing that there will be a single tyre supplier from 2007, subject to approval of new car regulations by the Technical Working Group.

But neither of F1's current tyre suppliers have said that they will automatically apply for the contract.

When asked by Autosport-Atlas about whether Bridgestone was interested in being a sole tyre supplier again, the company's director of motorsport Hiroshi Yasukawa said: "We prefer competition. We will wait and see."

Michelin's Pierre Dupasquier said that his company were also undecided about their future plans.

"We will review closely what has been agreed on, and we will make a decision what to do in the near future," he said.

FIA president Max Mosley has admitted that there is a chance that neither Bridgestone nor Michelin would get the tender.

"Maybe neither will want to do it," he told Autosport-Atlas. "They might say we only want competition.

"But we will invite all the tyre manufacturer who might be capable of doing it, setting out the conditions and putting it out to tender and see what comes back."
