The United States Grand Prix fiasco may have cast doubt about Formula One's future in America, but it appears to have caused little damage to the sport's core television audience

TV Ratings Boosted by Indy Fiasco

Figures released on Monday indicate that viewers for Britain's ITV coverage did not follow the example of fans at Indianapolis and turn their back on the race as the events unfolded - and in fact more viewers tuned in over the course of the race once it became clear that the controversy was unfolding.

The coverage started with just three million viewers for the pre-event build-up at 6pm but, by the time the race started and the drama of the Michelin boycott was unfolding, 5.4 million viewers were tuned in.

By the end of the race, viewership had grown to 6.3 million - although this figure was likely boosted by the fact that soap opera Coronation Street was due to start imminently.

The average audience for the Indy coverage was an impressive 4.4 million - just 500,000 down on the Canadian Grand Prix, but more than double the figure that watched the European Grand Prix in May.
