Tung thrilled with F1 run
Ho-Pin Tung was thrilled after his first run in a Formula 1 car after driving a Williams-BMW at Jerez today (Thursday). In doing so, Tung became the first Chinese driver ever to test an F1 car
Tung, who won this year's Formula BMW Asia series, drove a 2002-spec FW24 at the Spanish circuit. He was watched by a BMW delegation of over 65 people, several of whom had jetted in from China specially for the occasion.
"It's been a wonderful day," said Tung. "I'd like to thank BMW and Williams for this opportunity. It's all so impressive, especially the brakes. I just enjoyed it so much. It is of course a matter of some pride to also be the first Chinese driver to get behind the wheel of such a prestigious F1 car."
Although Tung had not driven at Jerez before, he did manage to get some experience of the circuit.
"I played a motorbike computer game to learn the Jerez track," he said. "I learned the corners from that, but it's a bit different in real life! Juan Pablo Montoya and Marc Gene took me out in a rent-a-car to show me the track, so thanks to them for that. Tomorrow I think I'm going to wake up saying 'oh damn, it's over!'"
