Trulli Fastest at Friday Testing

Italians Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella denied Renault driver Fernando Alonso top spot in the opening session of his home Spanish Grand Prix in Friday morning private testing.

Trulli, Alonso's teammate at Renault, was quickest throughout the two-hour test and ended on top with a lap time of 1:17.706. Alonso had been set to finish second quickest but was pushed down to third in the final minutes after Jordan driver Fisichella produced a late quick lap to jump up from seventh.

The Spaniard ended third ahead of Renault test driver Allan McNish, with Antonio Pizzonia, under pressure at Jaguar, fifth quickest ahead of his teammate Mark Webber.

Pizzonia's session was not without trouble, however, as he missed his box in the pitlane and sent a mechanic flying into the air with the Jaguar technician taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Webber was the busiest man on track after completing 53 laps, and he finished ahead of British rookies Ralph Firman, of Jordan, and Minardi driver Justin Wilson.

Wilson got the better of his teammate Jos Verstappen for the first time, finishing more than two-tenths ahead of the Dutchman, who ended at the bottom of the times.

Italian Matteo Bobbi, who made his testing debut for Minardi in Imola two weeks ago, failed to take to the track with suggestions that his $1 million (US Dollar) deal has fallen through.

Alonso was forced to bring his Renault to a halt at the side of the track at turn three after engine problems hampered his progress after 48 minutes of running.

Pizzonia made a minor error at the opening corner minutes later, when he ran over the gravel before returning to the track. The Brazilian then ran over the gravel for a second time.
