Thankful Panis Sad to Leave BAR

Frenchman Olivier Panis is sad to be leaving the British American Racing team after two seasons with the Brackley-based squad.

"It's always sad when you leave a team, especially when you have worked well together," said Panis, who will drive for Toyota next year. "This year has been tough for me but the team have made good progress and I'm glad I was able to contribute to that. I want to thank everyone for all their hard work over the last two seasons.

"I have really enjoyed working with them. I would also like to thank Jacques for being a great teammate. Our relationship has been very good and I wish him and the team every success for the future."

The veteran Frenchman, winner of one Grand Prix in his Formula One career, concluded his relationship with BAR with a disappointing Japanese Grand Prix, where he was hit by mechanical problems that forced him to come into the pits twice before retiring from the race.

Canadian teammate Jacques Villeneuve also failed to finish the race due to an engine blow up. The 1997 World Champion is now looking forward to a stronger season in 2003.

"At least we've made progress throughout this season and this is the first time that has happened at BAR so that's a positive," said Villeneuve. "Next year will definitely be a lot better so we have to look forward now.

"I wish Olivier all the best for the future. He has been a great teammate and we've worked very well together over the past couple of years."
