Leading teams have hinted that the French Grand Prix could see some try a four-stop strategy in the race, which would be novelty in races other than those afflicted by changeable weather
The new circuit layout at Magny-Cours means that with a chicane after the pit lane entry, the time penalty for making a pitstop is reduced. Many fans will remember the European Grand Prix at Donington in 1993, when Ayrton Senna (before the advent of pit lane speed limits) actually set the fastest lap of the race when he entered the pit lane before the McLaren team was ready for him and subsequently drove straight through!
That characteristic, allied to the fact that tyre degradation is estimated at a tenth of a second per lap at Magny-Cours, one of the highest figures anywhere, meaning an advantage in getting new tyres on as often as possible, could see some interesting strategy.
One leading team boss said: "It's the classic situation where there is a chicane after the pit lane entrance. You could potentially have a two, three or four stop strategy here. I think we could have a very interesting race because it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that there will be teams who adopt all of those strategies."
Jordan's director of race and test engineering Gary Anderson quipped: "With our strategy we weren't expecting to qualify very high - we're just hoping everyone else is doing five stops!"
