Singapore GP: Daniil Kvyat leads Kimi Raikkonen in F1 practice

Kvyat was only 18th fastest and completed just eight laps in the first session of the weekend, after encountering a fuel system problem on his Red Bull-Renault, but he shrugged off his lack of track time to set the pace in the second session, which took place under floodlights.

His 1m46.142s effort on the super-soft tyre put the Russian just 0.039 seconds clear of Raikkonen's Ferrari.

Kvyat's Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo topped the timesheet for a while early on, when the drivers were focused on running the harder soft-compound tyre.

The Australian was just 0.075s slower than Raikkonen after bolting on the super-softs.

World champion Lewis Hamilton locked up heavily at Turn 1 on his first attempt at a flying lap on the super-soft.

The Mercedes driver's second effort was only good enough for fourth, 0.223s slower than Ricciardo's RB11.

Hamilton's team-mate Nico Rosberg, who has taken the last of his allocated engines for the season after suffering a failure on his third unit in Italian GP practice earlier this month, was only seventh fastest, behind the second Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel and the Force India of Sergio Perez.

Double world champion Fernando Alonso was the last driver to lap below 1m47s as he set the eighth-fastest time for McLaren, ahead of the second Force India of Nico Hulkenberg and Max Verstappen's Toro Rosso.

Felipe Massa was the fastest of the two Williams drivers in 11th, just ahead of Sauber pair Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson, driving the heavily revised C34 this weekend.

Verstappen's Toro Rosso team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr was one of several drivers not to get away with striking the wall during the session.

The Spanish rookie suffered a left-rear puncture after hitting the wall at Turn 5, while Lotus racer Pastor Maldonado also compromised the early part of his session by brushing the barriers.

Sainz wound up 15th fastest, behind Jenson Button's McLaren and ahead of Romain Grosjean's Lotus and the second Williams of Valtteri Bottas.

Will Stevens became the second Manor driver to crash in practice for this event, after losing the rear end of his car at Turn 11 early on in the session.

His new team-mate Alexander Rossi joined the session late, after waiting for his car to be repaired following the heavy impact with the wall the American suffered in FP1.
