Silverstone test: day 2 morning

Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella topped the times at this morning's F1 test at Silverstone, followed by Italian compatriot Jarno Trulli, giving a boost in confidence to Benetton and Jordan ahead of the German Grand Prix

Both managed to overturn the dominance McLaren has shown in testing and race conditions over the past few weeks, edging Olivier Panis and David Coulthard into third and fourth spots. The McLaren test driver did his chances of a race seat next year no harm at all by edging ahead of race driver Coulthard for a second time.

Dario Franchitti continued to acclimatise himself to a current generation F1 car with Jaguar, while a team insider revealed that the most significant adjustment Dario was having to make was for the carbon brakes, which differ significantly in feel from the steel units used in Champ Cars.

Elsewhere, Darren Manning stepped in at BAR to take over from Ricardo Zonta, who is having wisdom teeth extracted (though rumours that Michael Schumacher is performing the operation proved wide of the mark). Williams were present but didn't run, and Alex Wurz did not get to drive the Benetton,
