Silverstone day 2: Barrichello again

Rubens Barrichello continued to set the pace in Formula 1 testing at Silverstone today (Wednesday), outpacing fellow Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia by just over half a second

The Ferrari ace was working on set-up work and tyre development for Silverstone and the Nurburgring along with team-mate Michael Schumacher, who set the third fastest time. Felipe Massa was also running for the Italian team, working on tyre evaluation driving an F2002.

Nick Heidfeld was fourth fastest for Sauber, despite having something of a troublesome day, with first a hydraulic problem and later a gearbox failure curtailing his running. The German tested some revised aerodynamic and suspension parts for the Swiss team.

Juan Pablo Montoya was fifth for Williams after a day spent concentrating on long runs, ahead of Jenson Button's BAR-Honda, the Briton having his first test since his Monaco accident. Button tested a new rear-wing on his car, but his day ended early when he ran over an unknown object, causing damage to the underside of the car.

"It's nice to be back testing again," Button told autosport.com, "although we had a bit of a problem before the end of the session, so we had to stop early."

Button's team-mate Jacques Villeneuve sat at the foot of the timesheets, having encountered a clutch problem on his BAR. "It's a new problem we haven't seen before, so we have to determine what caused it," the Canadian told autosport.com. "I'm going to do some aerodynamic work tomorrow, but first we have to find out what broke the gearbox."
