Schumacher wins in Brazil

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher won the Brazilian Grand Prix after McLaren rival Mika Hakkinen retired on lap 30

The German won his second successive race to open up a 14-point lead, with David Coulthard (McLaren) and Giancarlo Fisichella (Benetton) finishing second and third respectively.

Schumacher stormed into the lead at the beginning of lap two, after getting ahead of David Coulthard from the startling line.

Hakkinen regained the lead on lap 20 when Schumacher pitted for the first of his two stops.

However, the Finn's McLaren retired ten laps later with a blown engine, handing the lead back to the Ferrari driver.

Schumacher's team-mate was also dogged by bad luck, in his home Grand Prix, when his Ferrari engine blew on lap 27.

Towards the end of the race Schumacher slowed, as Coulthard continued to eat into the German's lead.

However, the double world champion held on to win Ferrari's first Brazilian Grand Prix for 10 years.

Finishing behind third-placed Fisichella was Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

Fifth was Frentzen's team-mate Jarno Trulli, with William's Ralf Schumacher in sixth.

Jenson Button finished seventh.

Jaguar duo Eddie Irvine and Johnny Herbert both retired from the team's second race.

Irvine spun into the tyre wall, while Herbert retired on lap 52 with engine trouble.
