Ferrari's Michael Schumacher wants to seal his record sixth Formula One title with a win in Japan next month despite needing only one point from the final race.
"It's a very good position for us to start the last race," said the German after winning Sunday's US Grand Prix to take a nine-point lead over his sole remaining title rival Kimi Raikkonen.
Schumacher has 92 points to Raikkonen's 83 with the trip to Suzuka to come on October 12.
"We just need one point basically but you never know," added the German who has won the last three races at Suzuka. "To be first, first you have to finish. My target will be to win another race."
Schumacher said he was delighted with his day after starting seventh on the grid with Raikkonen on pole and Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya, his closest rival before the race, on the second row for Williams.
Montoya finished sixth, leaving him with 82 points but out of contention as he cannot match Schumacher's six wins.
"It was a great and important win," said Schumacher. "Now I am so pleased. This is such an emotional day today, so fantastic after a not very great qualifying performance...there was everything in it today and to win this at such a crucial stage in the Championship means a lot.
"Our tifosi (fans) just carried us to this success."
Tyres and the changeable weather were crucial on a showery and cold Indianapolis afternoon, with Schumacher pitting again for a tyre change on lap 20 right after coming in for his regular stop.
"It was a crucial moment," said the winner. "We had unbelievable tyres for these conditions that gave us the victory today."
