Sauber are looking for a replacement for Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, and several drivers have been linked with the seat, including former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, who visited the team's Hinwil factory last month.
This week's Autosport magazine quoted a source close to the team as saying the Canadian was on the verge of a two-year deal. Sauber, however, said he is yet to make a decision.
"The situation concerning the second driver is completely open - I haven't even decided whether to go the route of an experienced driver or a young one," Sauber told Atlas F1. "It's not important to make a quick decision, it's important to make the right one."
The team will be testing F3000 champion Vitantonio Liuzzi next week, and Sauber said Britons Anthony Davidson and Gary Paffett are set to test in October. He clarified, however, that experienced drivers will not be tested.
