Sauber may use new engine at Silverstone

Sauber may use a new specification of its Petronas-badged customer Ferrari V10 engine in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend after running a race simulation of the C-specification unit during the four-day test at Barcelona test last week

The Swiss team, which has struggled to break out of the midfield this season, has said that depending on the results of the tests, the engine "will be used as soon as possible".

The team is attempting to end a string of engine-related problems and both Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Harald Frentzen hope that Silverstone will see a revival of the team's fortunes, particularly since the German pair both like the venue.

"I like coming to England and Silverstone," said Heidfeld. "I was there often when I was racing in F3000 and testing for McLaren-Mercedes, and I have some good memories of those days.

"I like the English fans. They really like the sport and the drivers, and are into the history. That makes for a great atmosphere all weekend. Our recent test at Silverstone in mid-June went well and our car has been well suited to the track in recent years, so I am hopeful. And of course there is always the chance of rain!"

Frentzen agrees: "The British fans are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and more balanced than fans anywhere else in the world. We get a lot of support from them. They are quite open in their emotions. I hope we can give them something good, especially after the way our car went in the pre-race test."
