Brazilian Rubens Barrichello finished fastest in Saturday's second practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix as his World Champion teammate Michael Schumacher ended the session in the barriers.
Barrichello, who finished fastest on Friday, continued his strong form as he looks to claim his third win in four races with a victory on home soil at Interlagos on Sunday. But it all went wrong for Schumacher, who has only won once in the last four after a run of 12 wins in 13, when he lost control of his car as he headed into turn six at high speed and hit the barriers.
The German escaped unscathed but the rear of his Ferrari had to be extinguished after a brief fire and the session was stopped with little more than one minute remaining. Schumacher still finished second fastest, 0.123 seconds slower than Barrichello's session-topping lap of 1:10.229 which is now the fastest lap of the weekend so far.
McLaren showed a strong performance with Finn Kimi Raikkonen and Scot David Coulthard third and fourth although Coulthard was lucky to avoid damage when he spun his car on the entry to the pitlane early in the session.
Briton Jenson Button finished fifth fastest for BAR with Spaniard Fernando Alonso, of Renault, sixth and German Williams-BMW driver Ralf Schumacher in seventh place.
Japan's Takuma Sato finished eighth for BAR with Australian Mark Webber ninth in the lead Jaguar and Brazilian Felipe Massa the fastest Sauber driver in tenth place but still within a second of Barrichello's time.
