Rubens Barrichello Q&A

With five races to go Rubens Barrichello is still five points off second place, and to a degree Ferrari's efforts are now focussed on helping him secure that position. The team certainly owes him a favour, not just because of the infamous four points he gave away in Austria, but because of the series of last minute problems that seem to strike only car number two. In Spain and France he didn't get off the grid, and in Germany he had to make a late switch to the T-car, ultimately salvaging third. However, team mate Michael Schumacher has his own agenda, such as setting new records for wins and points in a season, so it might not be so easy. Adam Cooper spoke to the Brazilian

"We had a problem with the transmission. Luckily I had another car. There's nothing to say really - they spotted a problem, I had another car, and I had to use it."

"At that time you have to be a robot and just work your way, be cool, and there's no problem. I was lucky enough to have another car ready for me, and off I went. The car seemed to have the same type of pace in the warm-up, so I was quite confident."

"No, no. The only thing that cost me was I had not raced with that seat, and had a little bit of back pain. That wasn't fantastic."

"In a way it was a bit disappointing, but I don't know what happened. The fuel hatch didn't open, and I don't know why."

"I had a really long brake pedal, so it was really difficult to keep the car on the track. There was no way."

"Three points was a plus more than a minus."

"Exactly. It's more that I've scored three points on a difficult situation rather than lose three points."

"I had a fantastic race last year. I finished second, but I was really fighting for the lead almost, so I'm looking forward to it."

"As much as possible I would like to win. If at the start of the season I said OK, I'm going for second place in the championship, I'd think I was not doing very well. You should think of individual wins. I'm not putting a target on winning 50% of them. I want as many as I can. The car is good, the tracks that are coming are quite good for me as well."

"Inside of the team we are talking the same way. Possibly we are going to approach the races in a different way. There's just more freedom for me in racing conditions for me to be able to race even harder and even further. Ross talks to me as much as he talks to Michael. It's not like it's something different right now, like Rubens we're going to make you win this and that. When you do that it's bad, you create such an amount of pressure, and if you don't deliver in some areas, it feels bad. For sure it felt bad for me in France where I was standing still on the start, so they want to make up for that. But it's not anything where they say we're going to make you win all the races. We're going to make the best for you to be able to do it, and you're going to be able even to fight with Michael in the races."

"It's another car, another year, less hair... There's a lot going on. I'm not even thinking about next year."

"I had to leave. I had to take my sister back to Lisbon, because she was taking a flight the next day. I wasn't thinking that Michael would win the championship in Magny-Cours, so I wasn't prepared for that!"
