Romain Grosjean weighing up Haas/Ferrari links for F1 future

Romain Grosjean is weighing up whether to sign for Renault next season, or jump ship to Formula 1 newcomer Haas with the prospect of then joining Ferrari in 2017

Grosjean remarked on Thursday he had "made a decision, everything is clear in my head and I know what's going to happen for me in the future".

The suggestion is Grosjean has already signed for Haas, however, AUTOSPORT understands this is not the case and instead the option of being a part of a Renault works team remains.

Grosjean's initial seven-race stint with Renault at the end of 2009 ended on a sour note, but it is understood there is willingness on both sides to work together again, with Total being a strong supporter for Grosjean.

Who should drive for Haas in 2016?

At present, according to AUTOSPORT sources, it is a close call on whether Grosjean will be a Renault driver next season.

Grosjean still has a year remaining on his current deal with Lotus, which Renault would take up, while he also has a contract with Gravity Management, the company run by the team's co-owner Gerard Lopez.

In the background, however, there is a tie up with Haas, but potentially only for one season as it is understood Grosjean could then join Ferrari as replacement for Kimi Raikkonen once the Finn's contract expires at the end of next season.

So a switch to Haas - given its links to Ferrari in taking on a power unit and other components - would represent a logical step for Grosjean to then take up what would be a vacant seat with the Scuderia in 2017.

When asked about his future after Singapore GP free practice on Friday, Grosjean said: "Things change more or less every day, but I'm pretty clear with myself.

"I'm happy with my choice. When you're taking a decision, you think about the present, the future and where you want to be."

Grosjean was one of four key drivers linked this season with Ferrari given the uncertainty that surrounded Raikkonen and whether the team would take up the option on his contract.

Valtteri Bottas, Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo were the other names in the frame at the time.
