The team's latest engine, which is almost all brand new, is the second designed by the French manufacturer to use conventional geometry, since it ditched its unsuccessful wide-angle vee concept, and has been designed to respond to new regulations requiring units to last two grand prix distances.

"The RS25 is a clean sheet design," said Renault's engine designer Rob White. "It shares no major components with the RS24: 98 per cent of the parts are new.

"The engine maintains the 72 degree architecture of its predecessor but we have included the lessons learned from RS24 and further refined the engine chassis integration.

Despite its need for longevity, the engine was said to have impressed Giancarlo Fisichella in winter testing, when the driver ran it in the back of a hybrid R24, and unlike other teams who have launched so far this year, Renault expects its engine to be a step forward from 2004, despite the new two-race rule.

"The engine's centre of gravity is significantly lower, recovering nearly 70 per cent of the difference relative to the previous generation of wide angle engines," said Bell. "Equally, despite the doubling of life for this season the engine has not gained in weight."
