Renault engines to cost $15m

Renault Sport boss Patrick Faure says that any future customer supply of Renault engines is likely to cost more like $15m than the $10m target price suggested by the FIA

Renault is to switch back to a more classical engine design than its current wide-angle V10 by 2004 and Faure said: "We'll be ready to supply another team in the future with three conditions. The first and most important one is that we want to have our engine completely reliable and powerful first.

"Then, when we are ready, the second condition is that we do not lose money. We don't want to make money, but we don't want to lose it either.

"And third, we probably don't want to be just a supplier but also a partner of the second team, to enable us to have a few possible deals on trying some young engineers, young drivers or whatever. We think we will be ready to supply another team, let's say from 2005 or 2006 onwards."

Faure said that he was not concerned about FIA threats to ban traction control if the manufacturers did not supply customer engines at the right price. "I think we need discussion not threats in our business," he said.

"Maybe we are more expensive than other people, but our calculations show that for $10 million we would be losing money. To avoid that it should be around 15 million. Maybe slightly less, but very slightly."
