Renault confirms F1 commitment

Renault's F1 team president Patrick Faure says the French manufacturer is committed to a long-term future in Formula 1

There were fears that the future of the team was in doubt after Renault began a full examination of all its motorsport activities. The review was prompted by the imminent arrival of Nissan chairman and renowned cost-cutter Carlos Ghosn, who replaces Louis Schweitzer.

There has been speculation for several months that Renault might scrap its F1 programme in favour of a full works entry into the World Rally Championship. But it seems initial fears have been overcome and Renault F1, who came third in the constructor's championship this year, is not going anywhere.

"I recently met with Carlos Ghosn," Faure said in Brazil. "His message was crystal clear: 'Carry on!' I repeat once again that this company is committed to Formula 1 for the long term."

Faure also admitted that he would be keen to retain the services of team boss Flavio Briatore whose is committed to the team until the end of next season.

As for the future of our relationship with Flavio Briatore, that too seems promising," Faure said. "Flavio has met every target we have set him thus far and if he achieves that again in 2005 - and there is no reason to think he won't - then we would be pleased to extend our collaboration into 2006."
