Formula 1 engine designers have put off making any decisions about reducing engine power until the end of the year, following a meeting before last weekend's British Grand Prix

Engine boffins from the major manufacturers involved in F1 met with Charlie Whiting, technical delegate for motorsport's governing body the FIA, last week. They decided that any decisions regarding rule changes would be taken at the end of the year when designers could give it their undivided attention.

The FIA is keen to reduce the power output of Formula 1's current V10s, which produce in excess of 800bhp. A capacity reduction from three to 2.5-litres has been mooted as the most likely solution, but the current regulations will not change until 2007.

"The engine capacity cannot change until the end of the current Concorde Agreement (the document by which F1 is governed) in 2007," said techincal director for BMW Motorsport, Mario Theissen. "We will talk again later this year to make sure any solution is right."

Also up for discussion was the possibility of reducing costs by disallowing qualifying engines and forcing drivers to use the same engine on Saturday as Sunday. However, teams are thought unlikely to agree as blow-ups could be instigated deliberately on Saturday, in order to get a new engine for race day.
