Pizzonia Respects Williams Tyre Decision

Antonio Pizzonia has refused to blame his Williams team for fitting him with dry weather tyres at his first pitstop in the Belgian Grand Prix

The Brazilian had requested to stay on intermediates during the Safety Car period but when he came in for his stop he was fitted with dry tyres. With the tyres completely unsuitable for the conditions, Pizzonia had to pit again to revert to inters - pushing his well down the order.

Without that error Pizzonia could well have been in contention for a podium finish - and would not have been the lap down that eventually resulted in him crashing with Juan Pablo Montoya.

But despite that fact, and with Jarno Trulli lambasting his Toyota team for making the same error, Pizzonia has refused to hit out at what happened.

"I was surprised with their decision but I had to respect it," he told Autosport-Atlas. "I'm just filling in for Nick Heidfeld - I'm not here to make a fuss.

"The team did what they thought was the best solution, but it didn't work out."

Pizzonia's eventual exit after colliding with Montoya took away from the sparkle caused by his points-scoring finish in the Italian Grand Prix - but the Brazilian was not too upset.

"I think in Monza things went well and here it was a bit of a lottery," he said. "But it was positive too, because I could have scored points. It was a messy race and to be able to fight for points was already good."

Pizzonia is likely to be retained by Williams for the Brazilian Grand Prix after Heidfeld fractured his shoulder blade in a bicycle accident at the weekend.
