No change with new Formula 1 tyre rules, McLaren's Button predicts

Jenson Button believes the decision to offer greater freedom for tyre choice in 2016 will make little difference because Formula 1 teams will ultimately converge on the same options

From next season, Pirelli will make three of the five dry F1 compounds available over the course of each grand prix weekend.

Teams will choose which two of the compounds they would like to use in advance of the event and these will remain secret until two weeks before a race.

In theory, the new rules should offer scope for varying strategies.

But Button said: "Everyone will use the same tyres.

"Unless they have a massive issue with one tyre, everyone will use the same tyres. They have limited it.

"If it was completely open and you could use any of the tyres available, then you might have the possibility of someone running something a bit different, a bit crazy.

"But you're limited to three different tyres and everyone will be on exactly the same.

"After the first race, nobody will talk about it any more."

When asked if this was a missed opportunity to spice up the show, Button said: "There are so many missed opportunities in sport.

"It is what it is, you can't change it."
