Mosley: Two manufacturers could quit

Max Mosley, the president of the sport's governing body the FIA, has questioned the long-term involvement of at least two of Formula 1's manufacturers in an interview in AUTOSPORT's sister publication F1 Racing

Mosley believes that two of the seven car makers involved in F1 could pull-out in the next few years.

"There are at least two [manufacturers] whose long-term involvement I regard as questionable," said Mosley, who would not reveal which manufacturers he thought were likely to withdraw. He pointed out that, historically, manufacturers do not stay involved in F1 for too long a period of time.

He said: "For example, this is Mercedes' sixth time in grand prix racing. Their average stay has been about five years, and they're now in their longest ever stay."

Also in the interview, Mosley discusses his belief that the new regulations that have changed the face of F1 this year are working well, despite arguments from teams to the contrary.

"It's the TV figures that really matter," Mosley said. "There's no point having a set of regulations that the teams think is perfect if no-one's watching the races on TV. You see, if you manage to get your head outside the F1 goldfish bowl, you suddenly realise that the general public just aren't interested in all the arcane stuff. People come up to me in the street and say, 'I'd stopped watching it - now I'm watching it again.' That's what matters."
