The Williams team kicked off a three-day test at the Silverstone circuit, where they will prepare for the United States Grand Prix.
Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya and Spaniard Marc Gene were the men in charge of testing duties as German Ralf Schumacher continues to recover from an accident at the Monza circuit while testing two weeks ago.
Montoya, who finished second at the Italian Grand Prix last Sunday, was the fastest of the two drivers on track, outpacing Gene by almost a second after 73 laps. The test driver, who replaced Schumacher in the Monza race last weekend, completed 90 laps.
"We had a successful session today with Juan Pablo and Marc undertaking testing duties for us under glorious skies at Silverstone," said Williams test team manager Tim Newton. "Through the course of the day, we concentrated on testing brake and suspension components as well as performing some tyre testing work with Michelin.
"We managed to cover over 800 kilometres of running which has provided us with some invaluable information for the last two races of the year."
