Montoya Fastest in First Qualifying - Italian GP

Juan Pablo Montoya continued his impressive form in Monza on Saturday when he led Antonio Pizzonia in a Williams-BMW one-two as Ferrari faltered in the pre-qualifying session for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.

Colombian Montoya set a time of 1:19.525 - the fastest of the weekend - to beat Brazilian teammate Pizzonia by 0.146 seconds and issue a warning that their team could be contenders for victory this weekend.

But Ferrari pair Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello struggled to perform in the 26-degree heat and finished ninth and tenth respectively, handing them a big challenge for the later grid-deciding qualifying session.

BAR-Honda pair Takuma Sato and Jenson Button finished third and fourth fastest with Spaniard Fernando Alonso fifth for Renault and Italian Giancarlo Fisichella the fastest Bridgestone runner in sixth for Sauber.

Scot David Coulthard finished seventh fastest ahead of McLaren-Mercedes teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who won the last race in Belgium, and the Ferrari duo finished off the top ten.

German Nick Heidfeld failed to set a time after coasting around the track when he appeared to have a problem with his Jordan but his teammate Pantano was just happy to take part in the session after his crash in morning practice.
