Michael Leads All-Schumacher Front Row in Germany

World Champion Michael Schumacher delighted the partisan German crowds at a sunny Hockenheim on Saturday when he finally halted Colombian rival Juan Pablo Montoya's sensational run of five successive pole positions in qualifying for the German Grand Prix.

The Schumacher brothers will start from the front row of the grid after Ralf Schumacher almost beat his brother to the pole before the leader of the Ferrari team stretched his legs to a canter while Montoya struggled to break into a trot for the first time in six qualifying sessions.

Schumacher's time of 1:14.389 beat his brother by 0.181 seconds, while Brazilian Barrichello was third for Ferrari after leading the way early on and Montoya ended a disappointed fourth.

Kimi Raikkonen, of McLaren claimed the fifth fastest time and will start on the third row of the grid alongside the sensational Giancarlo Fisichella, who equalled Jordan-Honda's best qualifying result of the season with sixth fastest time.

Frenchman Olivier Panis, of British American Racing Honda, was seventh with Jarno Trulli a surprise eighth after struggling all weekend in the Renault.

Briton David Coulthard was a disappointing ninth for McLaren-Mercedes in one of the German manufacturer's home races and German Nick Heidfeld ensured three of the four home stars made it onto the top five rows with tenth place for Sauber.

Raikkonen held the early advantage until the Ferrari pair came out and immediately shot up to first and second places as Schumacher claimed top spot with a lap of 1:15.059.

Ralf Schumacher then made it a provisional family front row when he moved to second and pushed Barrichello down a spot, with Fisichella lying in a surprise fourth place.

But it didn't last long as Barrichello moved to the top with the first lap of the afternoon to break the one minute 14 seconds barrier and made it an all-Ferrari provisional front row with 15 minutes to go.

Schumacher then stepped up the mark again by going a further two tenths of a second faster than his teammate, but his brother then beat that time with eight minutes to go as the session boiled up to a frantic conclusion.

But after efforts from Montoya and Barrichello both failed, it was left to the elder Schumacher to disappoint his little brother with a lap in the dying second which secured his first pole in seven races.

Arrows qualified for the race after missing the French Grand Prix, showing their usual pace, German Heinz-Harald Frentzen 15th with Brazilian Enrique Bernoldi three places further back.

Malaysian Alex Yoong failed to qualify for the third time this year after failing to reach the required 107 percent time despite the new track being expected to act as a leveller for all the drivers.
