Mercedes: FIA International Tribunal a chance to explain full facts

Mercedes says it welcomes the opportunity to explain the facts behind its recent secret tyre test, after being summoned to face a hearing of the FIA's International Tribunal

The Brackley-based team is being investigated for a potential breach of Formula 1's sporting regulations in running a 2013 car in a test for Pirelli following this year's Spanish Grand Prix.

Their action became the subject of a protest from Red Bull and Ferrari at the Monaco Grand Prix, with the FIA believing there is enough evidence for there to be a disciplinary hearing.

Mercedes said on Thursday that the hearing would be the perfect chance for it to explain its case, and is adamant it did not break the rules because it claims it was given authority to run its current car by the FIA.

How the International Tribunal works

A statement issued by the team said: "Mercedes-Benz acknowledges the decision of the FIA to take the matter of the Pirelli Test before the International Tribunal.

"We welcome the opportunity to explain the full facts of the Pirelli test in an open and transparent manner at the International Tribunal.

"Sporting integrity is of primary importance to Mercedes-Benz and we have the utmost confidence in the due process of the FIA."

No date has yet been set for the International Tribunal hearing, but under the FIA's statutes it could take up to 45 days for a meeting to be scheduled.
