McLaren Duo Quickest at Valencia - Day One

Three Formula One teams kicked off on Monday their final test before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, working at the Valencia circuit.

The McLaren-Mercedes team dominated the session with their old MP4-19B cars, driven by both test drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Alexander Wurz. The Spaniard set an impressive pace in the Michelin-shod car, finishing just 0.018 off the track record.

World Champion Michael Schumacher was third quickest for Ferrari, the German driving the F2004M as he focused mainly on tyre testing, completing runs of no more than 12 laps during most of the day.

Schumacher, whose car stopped on track at the end of the day with a mechanical problem, worked alongside teammate Rubens Barrichello, also in the F2004M.

The Brazilian had a trouble-free day but finished slowest, behind the only Williams in action at the Spanish circuit. The FW27 was driven by Australian Mark Webber, who covered 81 laps after stopping on track twice due to mechanical failures.

BAR and Toyota will join the test tomorrow.
