McLaren Ahead of Renault, Says Alonso

Championship leader Fernando Alonso thinks rivals McLaren are more competitive than his Renault team ahead of the sixth round of the Championship at Monaco

McLaren's Finn driver Kimi Raikkonen dominated the Spanish Grand Prix 10 days ago, with Alonso having to settle for a distant second despite having scored three consecutive victories before his home Grand Prix.

The Spanish driver, however, believes Renault have a good chance of winning Sunday's race.

"I think at the moment McLaren are a little bit in front of us in terms of competitiveness, we know that," said Alonso. "I think there is some sort of aero package coming from now to the next races so I think we can be equal to them and then fight for the victories with them.

"We know this and, anyway, here is a very special track and not always a good car wins in Monaco.

"Last year we saw Ferrari dominated the whole Championship but here in Monaco they were not quick enough to win the race. We know the McLaren is quick but here is always very special."

Alonso, who leads the standings by 18 points from Toyota's Jarno Trulli, reckons winning in Monaco would be something special for him.

"I hope to win the race here because it is a very special race for the drivers and for the history of Formula One," Alonso added.

"Winning in Monte Carlo may be something more than winning in another place, but to arrive leading the Championship, I think, doesn't mean anything."

Renault have scored four wins so far this season and also lead the Constructors' Championship in front of Toyota.
