McLaren ahead despite Schuey: Mugello part 3

Olivier Panis, McLaren's test driver, was fastest at the shared McLaren/Ferrari test at Mugello for a third day, despite Ferrari bringing Michael Schumacher into the equation. David Coulthard also appeared but the first head-to-head between the two title rivals turned into an anti-climax, when the Scot only completed 28 laps, with a time off the pace of Panis

McLaren ahead despite Schuey: Mugello part 3

Panis achieved 105 laps of the Mugello circuit, which is owned by Ferrari, with a fastest lap of 1m26.269s, compared to Schumacher's best lap of 1m26.306s and Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer on a lap of 1m27.518s. Coulthard's best effort was a lap of 1m28.548. The Ferrari drivers completed 98 laps and 67 laps respectively in a day of uninterrupted good weather.

The performance of Panis will doubtless be of cheer to McLaren, who currently trail Ferrari in the constructors' and drivers' championships. The teams worked on aerodynamics and set-up for the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix

Schumacher will remain at Mugello today (Friday) while Badoer has decamped to Fiorano.
