Max Verstappen joins Red Bull F1 junior programme

The Dutch racer, son of ex-Formula 1 driver Jos, has won seven F3 races in his maiden season of car racing.

AUTOSPORT reported last week that his rookie form had attracted interest, and a deal has been struck with the Austrian firm.

"We are very pleased to announce that Max Verstappen has accepted our invitation to join the Red Bull Junior Team," said a statement from Red Bull.

"This is effective immediately and the 16-year-old will continue his Formula 3 campaign at the Nurburgring this weekend as a Red Bull Junior."

Red Bull has also confirmed that Verstappen will compete in the Macau Grand Prix, with his Van Amersfoort Racing team understood to have already had a deal in place for the showpiece F3 event.

Verstappen recently drove an old-spec Formula Renault 3.5 car at the Red Bull Ring, but the energy drinks firm stressed this was simply for photoshoot purposes.
