Jordan takes Heidfeld option

Formula 1 team Jordan Grand Prix has taken up an option on the services of former Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld. The 26-year-old German will test for the team at Jerez next week

A berth with Jordan looks to be Heidfeld's last hope of securing a race seat for 2004. After being overlooked by McLaren in favour of Kimi Raikkonen a few years ago, Heidfeld has been stuck at Sauber and now lost his seat, along with team-mate Heinz-Harald Frentzen, due to the arrival of Giancarlo Fisichella and return of Felipe Massa to the Swiss outfit.

Team chief Eddie Jordan believes Heidfeld can resurrect his career along with turning around the fortunes of the Silverstone-based team.

"Nick is a prime candidate for a revitalised Jordan Grand Prix next year," said Jordan. "We are anxious for him to start getting to know the team at this stage. It is an important test as we have got a lot of new components to try as well as vital tyre testing for Bridgestone."

Heidfeld will be joined at the test by Formula 3000 racer Jaroslav Janis, who will get his first taste of F1. They will both drive Ford-powered EJ13 chassis.

Jordan has confirmed that it will launch its 2004 car, the EJ14, in the first week of February.
