Jerez, day 2: Wurz tops times
It was business as usual at the top of the timesheets after the second day of testing at Jerez, with the McLaren-Mercedes of Alex Wurz setting the fastest time.
Wurz completed 64 laps of running on a grey day in southern Spain, setting a best time of 1m20.854, to finish just clear of Jaguar driver Antonio Pizzonia and Williams star Ralf Schumacher.
Jenson Button had his first drive for British American Racing, and set a best time of 1m22.540s after running 50 laps with the latest-spec Honda. Some drama was provided when his engine blew, but the driver was happy just to be back in action. "Driving was so much fun," he said. "It's great to be back in a racing car. I was a little worried yesterday and when I first went out it felt quicker than normal but within a few laps everything was as it should be."
The young Briton also gave his initial opinion of his new team. He said: "The team really listened to what I had to say. The car is very friendly and easy to work with and I like the way it drives. It seems to suit my style. The engine is very driveable. It doesn't matter if you have 900hp or not, it's the driveability that counts."
