Jenson Button Q&A

Jenson Button surprised a lot of people by taking fifth place in Friday's low-fuel qualifying at Barcelona, and he repeated the result on Saturday with race fuel aboard. That would seem to indicate that the package is competitive in all configurations, and on a day when the likes of McLaren and Williams struggled, Jenson has taken advantage. It remains to be seen of course what happens on Sunday when the first pit stops roll around, and Jacques Villeneuve has implied that his team-mate is running particularly light, but Jenson says that he has a good strategy. Adam Cooper spoke to the Briton after qualifying

"Yes, very happy. We were fifth yesterday, so I sort of expected to be quite high up. But also we've got a good strategy for tomorrow, so we've got both things very well. I was slow in the last sector, I lost a bit of time and made a few mistakes. The car was working well, but we just had a little bit too much oversteer."

"Exactly. It is fantastic, and I think we need it. We are quicker than we've seen so far this season. We've been very unlucky in races. So it is good, it's fantastic for everyone, and I just hope our strategy is the right one. But I really do think it is."

"Not more than anywhere else, it shouldn't do. But this is when we start getting to the proper circuits. This is a proper circuit. Imola is a lot of fun, bouncing over the kerbs, but it's not flowing or anything. The car seems to be working better on flowing circuits."

"Yeah, definitely. That's the positive. And we've always got new bits on the car, new aero bits, and a new engine. Not huge changes, but as long as we keep making the steps, I think we're going to move forward even more."

"We don't really know how hot it's going to be tomorrow, but if it's like today, I think we should be fine with what we're running. Again I think we've taken the right option there, I really do."

"We have to. Even though David isn't right near the front, I'm sure the McLaren will be quick. They always seem to be in the race. It would be nice to get a top six finish, and I think we're capable of it.
