Jenson Button Q&A

Jenson Button looked set for a frustrating afternoon at home after breaking his suspension in qualifying at Silverstone, and failing to set a time. Despite a low attrition rate he managed to climb into the points and score a popular eighth place. In the past there have question marks over Button's ability in wheel-to-wheel combat, but he showed what he could do by joining in the fun and taking no prisoners. An improvement in from by Bridgestone also helped BAR to raise its game, but it remains to be seen how the tyre war pans out in the last five races. Adam Cooper spoke to Jenson after the race



"It was a great race. The good thing was I got up to 12th before the second safety car, obviously after some people pitted. Then with the second safety car because I was the second car in our team I had to wait for Jacques to do his pit stop, so I dropped back to 18th again. I drove past the pit lane and looked at the board and thought, 'How can I be 18th? I was 12th a second ago!' I thought it was going to be hard work from here on, because you need to overtake in the first couple of laps. Then I just started overtaking people. I got past the Minardis, one of the Jordans, one of the Saubers, and started creeping up. It was a fantastic feeling."



"I got past Michael in the complex, because he made a mistake. I kept him behind me for a while, but I couldn't keep him behind me on the straight, because Jacques was so close in front, I lost all the aerodynamics through Becketts. So Michael just towed up and then dived down the inside. I tried to hold him off, but it was difficult."



"Yeah, we weren't sure what to do. It actually would have been better if we'd started from the pits, looking at it now, because we could have changed the wing level, but we couldn't, and we were running quite a lot of wing. I thought it was going to be very, very difficult to overtake, but compared to the Jordans and the Saubers, we had enough wing to overtake, but the Ferrari just pulled away, and so did the Williams. The Toyota was about the same, and I could not get past da Matta at the end."



"We decided pretty much last night, and we looked at it again this morning. If it was wet we would have started from the pits, obviously, but we couldn't take that risk. You can usually overtake four or so cars at the start, and I actually overtook five."



"It was great. I could see in front and behind, because down Hangar Straight it goes up, and you could see people racing. It was great to watch. David [Coulthard] battling with Trulli at the end was good fun."



"I got there before they could say anything, and there were no flags. It was actually quite lucky, because I was right behind the car in front and trying to overtake, and I was going to pull out on the left hand side because I thought he was blocking, and then I noticed the guy was running the wrong way. I actually thought it was a girl because he was wearing a skirt! It's such a shame because it was such an amazing weekend. There was such a big crowd here, and it was great to see so many flags towards the end of the race, Union Jacks and stuff, and it was such good racing. I think it was one of the best races we've had the dry for ages."



"I think they've made a step forward. We've got to wait and see. Consistency wise they've made a step forward, that's where most of it is."
