Jaguar 'upbeat and positive'

As one of the teams that opted to limit testing, in favour of extra running on Fridays at grands prix, Jaguar Racing is optimistic about its chances to score again as Formula 1 returns to Europe. The Nürburgring has undergone further changes in 2003, which should favour the teams with more track time in the race

"They changed the track a little last year and I hear that they have been doing some more changes this year also," says Mark Webber, "so it will be good to get on track this Friday and see what they have done.

"I raced here with F3000 and managed second in 2001. Even last year with Minardi I enjoyed the circuit and I believe that this year in the R4 it will be even more fun."

The team used up three of its 10 non-GP test days at Silverstone last week - working on aero, tyre and mechanical programmes - Antonio Pizzonia managing to post the second fastest time on Day Two.

"I have good memories of the Nürburgring as I have raced there twice in Formula 3000 and had good results with a podium position last year," said the Brazilian.

"We have been working closely with Michelin, trying a new casing which hopefully we will use at the Nürburgring. I remember from last year the tyre degradation was quite high so this work could prove very important."

With two more championship points in the bag, from Mark Webber's seventh place in Canada, Jaguar top brass has reason to be cheerful.

"We are ironing out the reliability gremlins," said Jaguar MD David Pitchforth. "We are hoping for good weather on the Friday so we can continue with our testing programme, and although both drivers know this circuit fairly well it is important to complete as much track time as possible.

"We learnt a lot in Canada and coupled with our three-day test at Silverstone last week we go to the Nürburgring circuit upbeat and positive."
