Hotel mishap sidelines Pizzonia

Antonio Pizzonia is set to miss this week's Jerez test after injuring his ankle in a bizarre incident at his hotel in Shanghai as he returned from last weekend's Chinese Grand Prix

Hotel mishap sidelines Pizzonia

The Williams test driver, who did a brilliant job for the team as stand-in for Ralf Schumacher in four races, missed a step in his hotel and his right foot folded underneath him, badly spraining his ankle.

Scheduled to test from Tuesday, he flew directly from China to Spain with an ice pack around his ankle but, after visiting the medical centre at Jerez, it became clear that he would not be able to drive. He is understood to have flown home to Monaco to recover.

Pizzonia's absence from the test, allied to Juan Pablo Montoya having finished his testing duties for the team prior to his switch to McLaren, means that Williams has drafted in part-time tester Olivier Beretta in Jerez. He will join Marc Gene today and tomorrow, with Ralf Schumacher coming in for the final day of the test.
