Herbert shows his form
Johnny Herbert is poised to qualify in the top 10 for the first time after turning in his best performance yet for Jaguar Racing in Friday practice.
The Brit set fifth fastest time in practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, lapping fourth-tenths faster than teammate Eddie Irvine, eighth, who was delayed by a yellow flag on his fastest lap.
Herbert's best starting position was 11th at the last race in Monaco, and he is under notice to improve his qualifying performances from his Jaguar team bosses.
"Today was one of my best showings of the season," said Herbert. "And it was one of the best for the team too because Eddie was right up there with me."
"The result shows we are moving in the right direction and I can feel there is still a lot more to come from the car if we can get the balance right.
"We're happy with practice but it is qualifying that counts."
Herbert has finished in the points twice in the last three years at Montreal.
He won praise from technical director Gary Anderson. "Johnny did an excellent job and is well placed to do well in qualifying."
Irvine was in confident mood too. "We need to tap into more performance for qualifying but we know where it can be found," he said.
Irvine has finished third here three times in six years and failed to finish the other three.
