Heidfeld's nightmare season ends early
Nick Heidfeld's disastrous Formula One debut season with Prost ended with an accident on the very first lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The shunt was triggered by Sauber's Pedro Diniz diving down the inside and hitting Heidfeld's Prost team-mate Jean Alesi in the second corner. The chain reaction that followed saw Heidfeld squeezed between Alesi and Arrows' Pedro de la Rosa.
"There were a lot going on, I just don't know what happened," said the Prost driver. "There were just too many cars in the same place at the same time."
Ironically Heidfeld will be replacing Diniz at Sauber next season. His Prost team-mate Jean Alesi was also caught up in the aftermath of the melee but rejoined unscathed and finished a distant 11th. Only Prost and Minardi have failed to score points in 2000.
